Insight into the Rajya Sabha Elections 2022

On June 10th, 2022, polls for 57 Rajya Sabha seats, spread across 15 states, were held. In 11 of the 15 states, the results of the elections were all but predetermined as there were no opposing candidates. Only in four states – Maharashtra (6 Seats), Rajasthan (4 Seats), Karnataka (4 Seats) and Haryana (2 Seats) – the election outcome was still indeterminate.

Der Aufstieg der digitalen Rupie und die Gefahren eines unregulierten Kryptomarktes

Die globalen Bankensysteme stehen im Zuge der Digitalisierung vor bahnbrechenden Veränderungen. Der „Kryptohype“ – als zunehmender Konkurrent des etablierten Finanz- und Geldmarktes – sorgt bei Politikern und Ökonomen allerdings für Skepsis und Sorge. In Indien verfestigt sich in der Regierung schon seit längerem eine deutliche Abneigung gegen jegliche Kryptowährungen, die seit April 2022 mit der eingeführten Besteuerung des Kryptomarktes einen neuen Impuls bekommen hat. Um eine staatlich abgesicherte Alternative zu Kryptowährungen anzubieten, plant Indien die Einführungen einer eigenen digitalen Zentralbankwährung bereits für 2023; die Länder der Eurozone haben dieses Ziel erst für 2026 ins Auge gefasst. Der ambitionierte Zeitrahmen hat wirtschaftliche, aber auch geopolitische Hintergründe und stellt die Regierung vor eine enorme Herausforderung.

On 23 May, NIAS Europe Studies, in collaboration with Kristu Jayanti College and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, India, organized a one-day national workshop on the theme “The war in Ukraine: Regional and global fallouts,” at Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore. The workshop was divided into three sessions, and participants across India presented on diverse topics such as the strategies of the US, Rus-sia, Europe, China, and the UN on the war in Ukraine. Presenters also focused on key issues, such as energy and the impact of sanctions. Fol-lowed by the presentation, each ses-sion was debated by discussants from the NIAS Europe Studies team and Kristu Jayanti College.
