European Data Summit 2021

Ready For Competition?

Platforms have 100% control over their algorithms, but what about us? Europe seems to be better at regulating tech firms than building its own and the continent has so far played no part in shaping the digital future. But will that change soon? The regulatory winter is coming and we ask: Europe, are we finally Ready For #Competition?

Details

"All roads lead to Chrome, not Rome" joked an EU judge about #Google when asking about the business model of attracting search traffic. Big online #platforms, or as we called them, Gatekeepers, play a central role in society and democracy at large.
With the #DigitalMaketsAct, the #DataGovernanceAct and the #Data Act, the EU is organizing our digital space for the coming decades. Gatekeepers shouldn't be the ones to decide who should be successful and new instruments should give people control of their personal data. The European Data Summit will address the policy options currently on the table: From contestable and fair markets to designing data intermediaries, from the use of data by governmental agencies to the blind spots of the GDPR, the Summit will examine fixing digital democracy in Europe.

The List of speakers include: Johnny Ryan, Irish Council for Civil Liberties; Francesca Bria, National Innovation Fund, Italy; Audrey Tang, Digital Minister, Taiwan; Amélie de Montchalin, Minister of Public Sector Transformation and Civil Service, France; Axel Voss, MEP European Parliament, EPP Group; Francesco Bonfiglio, Gaia-X Association; Andreas Schwab, MEP European Parliament, EPP , Ronja Kemmer, MP German Bundestag, CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group; Tommaso Valletti, Imperial College, London

Join us live in the Academy of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and in the Representation of the European Commission in Berlin or virtually on YouTube.

The livestream will be available on YouTube from December 1 - 3, 2021.
