Supporting moderate Islam in Indonesia

Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering engaging in political talks in Jakarta

Chairman of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), also former President of the European Union Parliament, Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, completed a series of visit in Indonesia from 28-30 April 2017. Dr. Pöttering attended KAS Conference of KAS Asia & Pacific team in Asia and Pacific region. During his trip, he was accompanied by Deputy Secretary General and Head of European and International Cooperation, Dr. Gerhard Wahlers.

On Friday, 28 April, Dr. Pöttering was welcomed by Vice President of Republic of Indonesia, Bapak Jusuf Kalla in Jakarta and both discussed the work that Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is performing in Indonesia. Recent topics and challenges in politic such as role of China in Southeast Asia, development of European Union, and new administration in United States were also covered during the talks. Vice President Kalla highlighted the vital role of moderate Islam in Indonesia and expressed his visions pertaining to the establishment of International Islamic University in Jakarta.

Young Muslims from all over the globe would have opportunities to learn moderate Islam that Indonesia is practising via this institution. Dr. Pöttering highly appreciated the plan and offered his assistance by sharing Germany’s experience and expertise to accomplish it. He then invited Vice President Kalla to visit Germany.

Later that afternoon, Dr. Pöttering met and had a dialogue with pesantren teachers who previously have attended trainings on human rights, religious tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution. Such trainings were delivered under KAS project which is co-funded by the European Union. Currently the project have trained 800 pesantren teachers who are promoting moderate Islam and tolerance in many areas in Java. Chairman of KAS applauded the good work the participants are undertaking and assured them that Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung will continue to extend its support.
