„A bridge-builder with unmatched achievements“
A video message from President Shimon Peres to former Chancellor Helmut Kohl
On October 1 thirty years ago, Helmut Kohl was elected Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. In a video message to the participants of a congress in Berlin on September 27 commemorating that event, President Shimon Peres described Kohl as „a great historic architect, an unbelievable healer of human relations, and a bridge-builder with unmatched achievements“. The main celebratory speech was given by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Palestinians and Israelis think a major regional war would erupt if Israel were to attack Iran
Joint Israeli Palestinian Poll, September 2012
Around 80% of Palestinians and of Israelis think that if Israel were to carry out a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities, a major regional war will erupt. However a majority of Israelis do not believe that Israel will strike and the climate of opinion is against it.
FIVE QUESTIONS, FIVE ANSWERS - PERCEPTION OF THE GERMAN DEBATE OF CIRCUMCISIONS IN ISRAEL
A CONVERSATION WITH THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF KNESSET, MR JACOB EDERY
In early May 2012, the District Court of Cologne decided that the genital mutilation of children for non-medical reasons is a principle to be considered as a crime, because the fundamental right of the child to physical integrity outweighed the parents' right to religious freedom. This violation of fundamental rights cannot be justified by consent of the parents. The doctor, who had performed a religious circumcision on a four-year-old Muslim boy, was accused but acquitted. The court held in his favor that he had mistakenly believed his act was not punishable.
Closer Relations Desirable
The EU and Israel are moving closer together, but relations are not as close as many in Israel would wish.
Five Questions - Five Answers: "Two States for Two Peoples" - Still a valid concept!
Interview with Dr. Ron Pundak, former member of the official Israeli negotiation team in the Oslo Process
The impasse in the peace process and unilateral acts by both Israelis and Palestinians have furthermore increased the already existing mutual distrust. Although latest surveys show that the majority of both populations still favor a two-states solution, more and more voices are heard who are searching for alternatives. In this political climate, we have asked Dr. Ron Pundak, chair of the Israeli Peace NGOs Forum, co-chair of the Palestinian-Israeli Peace NGO Forum and former member of the official Israeli negotiation team in the Oslo Process, five questions:

THE SHORT LIFE OF THE “NATIONAL UNITY GOVERNMENT”
CONSEQUENCES OF KADIMA LEAVING THE COALITION LED BY BENJAMIN NETANYAHU
Only ten weeks did Kadima participate in the Netanyahu government. The – not entirely surprising – end of this episode stands symbolically for the volatile “status quo” in the region, but also in Israel itself. The possibility to solve the backlog of domestic problems has been missed. For the moment, it does not appear as if Kadima had any pros-pects to tie up with the success from the 2009 Knesset elections in case of early elec-tions.
