Sorge um Friedensvertrag und Stabilität

Die Ereignisse der vergangenen Tage in den benachbarten arabischen Staaten wurden in Israel mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit verfolgt. Dabei standen die Ereignisse in Ägypten im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit, auch wenn die Entwicklungen in Tunesien, die Demonstrationen in Jordanien, im Gazastreifen, im Jemen und weiteren arabischen Staaten genau verfolgt wurden. Größte Sorge gilt in Israel dem strategisch wichtigen israelisch-ägyptischen Friedensvertrag und der Stabilität in der Region.

A Complex Question of Identity

Galilee and Jerusalem, the heartlands of the New Testament, are today part of the State of Israel. Christians only make up a small proportion of the total Israeli population. As a percentage of this total, their proportion is sinking, but in real terms their numbers are growing. Christians in Israel are mainly Arabs who are Israeli citizens, which gives them complex identity issues and different points of reference. Although their religious freedom is guaranteed, local Christian Arabs are faced with two challenges relating to their situation as a dual minority.

Politics, Elections and Local Governance in the Arab and Druze Sector in Israel

The recent municipal elections in Israel in November 2008 were characterized by very high Arab and Druze voting rates, reaching 90% in several municipal districts. In contrast, the participation of the Arab citizens in the elections to the 18th Knesset, only a few months later in February 2009, had declined, reaching an unprecedented low of 53.4%.
