On October 1 thirty years ago, Helmut Kohl was elected Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. In a video message to the participants of a congress in Berlin on September 27 commemorating that event, President Shimon Peres described Kohl as „a great historic architect, an unbelievable healer of human relations, and a bridge-builder with unmatched achievements“. The main celebratory speech was given by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Around 80% of Palestinians and of Israelis think that if Israel were to carry out a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities, a major regional war will erupt. However a majority of Israelis do not believe that Israel will strike and the climate of opinion is against it.

Seit mehreren Wochen beschäftigt die Debatte um die Strafbarkeit der Beschneidung von Jungen aus nichtmedizinischen Gründen nicht nur Deutschland, auch die israelische Öffentlichkeit verfolgt die Diskussion sehr aufmerksam. Die Meinungen in der israelischen Bevölkerung und den Medien gehen auseinander. Auf der einen Seite wird in einem möglichen Verbot der „schwerste Angriff auf jüdisches Leben seit dem Holocaust” gesehen. Ein säkularer Kommentator hingegen sehnt einen Staatslenker herbei, der auch „heilige Kühe“, wie das Festhalten an der aktuellen Beschneidungspraxis, schlachtet.

In early May 2012, the District Court of Cologne decided that the genital mutilation of children for non-medical reasons is a principle to be considered as a crime, because the fundamental right of the child to physical integrity outweighed the parents' right to religious freedom.This violation of fundamental rights cannot be justified by consent of the parents. The doctor, who had performed a religious circumcision on a four-year-old Muslim boy, was accused but acquitted. The court held in his favor that he had mistakenly believed his act was not punishable.
