During the conversation with Akihisa Nagashima, the National Security Adviser of the Japanese Prime Minister, the NATO experts Dr. Karl-A. Lamers, Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp and Michael Rühle discussed eminent issues of Japanese and regional security policy. Among others, the discussion focues on Japan's assessment of the role of China and the United States in a regional and global security architecture, especially with regard to the annonced intensified US engagement in the Asia-Pacific. Furhtermore Mr. Nagashima presented the Asia-related foreign and security policy strategy of the current Japanese administration of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. The relations between Japan and NATO also became an issue of the conversation. Japan remained a specially important patner of NATO, since they shared and promoted the same values and ideals of freedom and democracy.

At the beginning of their meeting the head of the NATO Delegation and President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Dr. Karl-A. Lamers, illuminated the current developments and perspectives in a number of regional and global security issues from a European point of view.

Mr. Akihisa Nagashima then replied with a detailed presentation on the role and possible future of NATO and its relations to Japan as well as other decisive actors in the regional and global security environment of his country.

Conclusively, the National Security Adviser of Prime Minister Noda illustrated a selection of issues and challenges in the Asian foreign and security policy environment with significant importance to the Japanese government to the members of the NATO Delegation, Dr. Karl-A. Lamers, Michael Rühle and Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp, as well as the KAS Resident Representative in Tokyo, Jörg Wolff (left to right).
