During the conversation with Akihisa Nagashima, the National Security Adviser of the Japanese Prime Minister, the NATO experts Dr. Karl-A. Lamers, Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp and Michael Rühle discussed eminent issues of Japanese and regional security policy. Among others, the discussion focues on Japan's assessment of the role of China and the United States in a regional and global security architecture, especially with regard to the annonced intensified US engagement in the Asia-Pacific. Furhtermore Mr. Nagashima presented the Asia-related foreign and security policy strategy of the current Japanese administration of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. The relations between Japan and NATO also became an issue of the conversation. Japan remained a specially important patner of NATO, since they shared and promoted the same values and ideals of freedom and democracy.
