Benedikt XVI. ruft zu Frieden und religiöser Koexistenz auf

Vom 14. bis 16. September 2012 besuchte Papst Benedikt XVI. den Libanon. Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund des anhaltenden Bürgerkrieges in Syrien und den gewaltsamen Protesten muslimischer Extremisten gegen westliche Institutionen in Nordafrika, im Zusammenhang mit dem in den USA veröffentlichten anti-islamischen Video, setze Papst Benedikt XVI. mit seinem Besuch ein Zeichen. Der Besuch endete mit einer öffentlichen Messe am Sonntag den 16. September, an der mehr als 300.000 Menschen verschiedener Religionen teilnahmen.

Der anhaltende Bürgerkrieg in Syrien wirkt sich zunehmend auf die innen- und regionalpolitische Haltung des Haschemitischen Königreiches aus. Während Jordanien lange Zeit versuchte, in der Syrien-Krise eine neutrale Position einzunehmen, zwingen der andauernde Flüchtlingsstrom und zunehmende Spannungen im syrisch-jordanischen Grenzgebiet das Land, sich verstärkt vom Regime Bashar al-Assads zu distanzieren. Die regionale Krise trifft Jordanien zudem in einer innenpolitisch schwierigen Zeit.

The Jordanian government recently endorsedby royal decree a temporaryelection law on May 18th, 2010, approximatelysix months after the dissolutionof the 15th Jordanian House ofRepresentatives, in November 2009.The law includes important changesthat guarantee more transparency andintegrity; it will be in effect for the upcominglegislative elections scheduledfor November 9th, 2010. However, significantproposed recommendationssuch as the “National Coalition to Reformthe Legal Framework Governingthe Electoral Process” have not beenincorporated into the new law.
