Election Workshop Series

Series of five workshops about the upcoming Jordanian general elections

KAS-Jordan Office and its cooperation partner, Al-Quds Center for Political Studies, are organising five, one-day workshops for Members of the Jordanian Parliament, leaders of different political parties, Jordanian scholars, young activist, and women's rights activists who represent different political and ideological trends in Jordan. The participants will discuss five different topics related to the upcoming parliamentary elections in Jordan in order to gain insides about new practices, current debates and future scenarios.

Workshop 1

Parliamentary Election in Jordan - Future Scenarios

The particpants discuss the upcoming parliamentary elections and possible scenarios for the election outcome in Jordan.

The main inputs will be given by H.E. Mousa Ma´ayta - Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs (MoPPA) - and Dr. Laith Nasrawin - a constitutional law expert. 

The Workshop will take place on the 20th of June, 2020 via Zoom Video Call.

Workshop 2

Online Voting - Pros&Cons

The participants will discuss the Pros and Cons of electronic online voting in the framework of the following scenarios:

- The elections will be held the latest by January 2021 in accordance with the Constitution. What measures have been taken to  guarantee a transparent and smoothly-running process?

-Postponing the elections for 1-2 years. What are the recommondationS of the IEC in this case?

-Conducting remote (online and/or mail voting) if the coronavirus continues to have a heavy impact on public life.

Starting point of the conversation are the new policies and measures that the Independent Commission for Elections (ICE) has taken.

The workshop will host H.E Khalid Al-Kalaldeh - Head Commissioner of the Jordanian Independent Election Commission - and Dr. Taleb Awad - expert and trainer in the parliamentary election system - to explore the electronic/online voting-perspectives and controversies with the participants.

The Workshop will take place on the 27th of June, 2020 via Zoom Video Call.

 

Workshop 3

Elections and the Youth - Dialogue between Party Leaders, Youth Associations and Movements

The workshop brings together representatives of different political parties from the right, left and centrist spectrum and youth movements in order to discuss the main reasons behind issues such as the low political particpation of the jordanian youth. The goal is to reach a common understandings and develop joint recommendations for a better cooperation and collaboration. 

The workshop will take place on the 11th of July, 2020 via Zoom Video Call.

 

 

Workshop 4

Democratic Nomination of Party Candidates to the Forthcoming Elections

During this one day workshop the participants will discuss the different democratic internal procedure and rules by which political parties decide who will be on the ballot paper as their recommended candidate. The aim of this session is to promote a more participatory process with a special focus on the engagement of women and youth.

Three experts from Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia, will join the workshop to discuss and explore with the participants the best tools and methods for selecting party's’ candidates in the elections:

Lamia Al Duraidi is a former Member of Parliament and political activist who present the Tunisian political parties’ expertise in the field. Hussein Abu Ruman is a Jordanian researcher and analyst and will introduce some Jordanian and international best practices. The third expert is Prof. Al Basheer Al Mattaqi who will present an overview on how different parties in Morocco choose their candidates for the parliament election while applying a quota system for women and youth candidates.

The workshop will take place on the 25th of July, 2020 via Zoom Video Call.

Workshop 5

Election Campaigns - Finances and Sponsorships

Participants will discuss a number of significant issues pertaining to the upcoming, nine-teenth parliamentary elections including the tools utilized by political parties to further obtain grassroots funding/support for their campaigns. In addition, methods to combat vote-selling and electoral fraud will be discussed.

The workshop will take place on the on the 29th of August, 2020 via Zoom Video Call.
