The discussion will be organized by the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, supported by KAS Cambodia.

A new Global Strategy for the European Union’s Foreign and Security Policy (EU Global Strategy) was adopted by the European Council on 28 June. Unfortunately, the release of the EU Global Strategy which was a result of almost two years of consultations and dialogue with policy makers, academics and analysts from EU member states and beyond, was very much overshadowed by the the UK’s referendum to leave the EU (Brexit).

The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, Federica Mogherini, acknowledged in the Foreword to the Global Strategy, that the existence of the Union is being questioned. Yet, it is also at this point of time when the EU is confronted with several crises that a stronger Union is needed. Brexit has created huge uncertainties for the UK and the EU. At the same time, the EU knows that the world surrounding it will not come to a standstill as the UK and EU sort out its future relationship. The EU’s economic and security interests are increasingly tied to the developments in the Asia-Pacific. Hence, the EU also needs a new approach and rethink its role in the Asia-Pacific as it wrestles with the implications of Brexit
