Within the past couple of months Cambodia has reached the end of its nearly 1 year political deadlock. The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the opposing Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) have met on July 22nd 2014 and agreed upon reforms within the National Assembly, the National Election Committee and parliamentary commissions. Shorty after, officials of the two parties have been elected and assumed their new responsibilities.

The study trip to Germany takes into account the recent political developments in Cambodia and the fact that a considerable amount of Members of Parliament have limited previous experience in working in the Parliament. Since the Members of Parliament of the newly formed National Assembly will organize parliamentary work for the next 4 years, their ability to fully grasp and effectively cope with their responsiblities is of utmost importance. The study trip will offer practical assistance - from the German context - to the Cambodian politicians by providing them with insights into several relevant topics. These are:

•Work of political groups and committees on national, regional and disitrict levels

•Collaboration between the Bundestag Office and the Electorial District Offices (Work in Constituencies)

•Relation between the youth wing and its party

The main expected outcome of the study trip is the better understanding of the Members of Parliament’s responsibilities and functions in different areas and a clear comprehension of the workings and connections of institutions relevant to their parliamentarian duties.
