DELGOSEA Workshop on Local Waste Management - Foundation Office Cambodia
Workshop
Details
The “Partnership for Democratic Local Governance in Southeast-Asia (DELGOSEA)” was launched in March 2010 and is co-funded by the European Commission and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung of Germany through the German Ministry for Development Cooperation. The network originally included 13 local government associations from five ASEAN member states (Cambodia, Indonesia, The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) and several other civil society and academic stakeholders on good local governance of the region. The key activities of the network focus on the exchange of good practices in local governance between its members.
Cambodia approximately generates around 7,305,000 tons/year of solid waste. Due to the high economic growth rates, along with urban and industrial development studies forecast a decline of the waste generation rate (currently 0.487kg/day). Cambodia also disposes about 1 million tons per year at dumping sites (2014), which has been increased from about 320,000 tons/year (2004). These figures show the field of tension between economic growth, on one hand, and the relevance of a well-functioning and sustainable financed waste management system on the other hand.
As mentioned above, DELGOSEA is committed to facilitate the exchange of best practice and lesson learned experiences between countries. The forthcoming workshop therefore deals with experiences in the field of local waste management and highlights challenges, successful waste management models and suggestions for improvement.
