For economic actors in Kenya, the political and economic devolution process goes along with both great opportunities and challenges. Particularly their contribution will enable the individual counties to achieve the possible economic development.

For economic actors in Kenya, the political and economic devolution process goes along with both great opportunities and challenges. Instead of nine provinces, Kenya is now governed by 47 counties. The counties’ independent governments shall, amongst other things, be allocated 15% of the national tax revenues. These new regulations have the potential to spur the economic development of the individual counties, including remote ones. To ensure economic growth, national actors representing the private sector such as the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) or the Kenya National Chamber of Industry and Commerce (KNCCI) play a crucial role. Particularly their contribution will enable the individual counties to achieve the possible economic development. For that purpose, however, those actors need to expand their mainly centralised (Nairobi) presence to the individual counties. It is important that companies which are lo-cated in remote areas receive the same kind of services as companies in Nairobi. Moreover, the private sector needs to engage more intensely with the county governments. The exchange between the private sector on county level and on national level needs to be enhanced. Only then, nationwide economic growth including the creation of new business opportunities, new companies and new jobs in the individual counties is possible.
