Uasin Gishu County was one of the areas affected worst during the post-election violence of 2007/2008. Property was destroyed and many lives were lost during the violence. Areas like Sugoi, Soy, Matunda, Langas, Kiambaa, Burnt Forest and Munyaka registered a very high number of casualties during the skirmishes .Many people are currently struggling to move on with their lives. Even though many people are in favor of the trials before the International Criminal Court (ICC), there is uncertainty about the sustainability of gains made due to the ICC proceedings.

In October 2000, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1325, which called for women’s equal participation in promoting peace and security and for greater efforts to protect women, who are more exposed to violence during and after conflict than men. Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organizes a meeting in one of the epicenters called Langas, that takes stock of the current state of knowledge on women, peace and security issues, including efforts to increase women’s participation in post-conflict reconstruction strategies and their protection from wartime sexual violence.

Reminiscent of the safe haven the facility provided to hundreds of people during the post- election violence, the meeting takes place in the PCEA church. It aims at giving a platform to women from all ethnic tribes to meet, mingle, share a meal and take a common stand regardless of the outcome of the processes at the ICC in The Hague.

The objectives of the meeting are to promote understanding of the UN resolution 1325, to promote healing, reconciliation and cohesion amongst women of different ethnic tribes in Uasin Gishu County, and for KAS to forge a strong partnership with women groups in Uasin Gishu County to lobby and advocate for peaceful co-existence in the region.
