Local and Regional Self-Government: A Stimulus or an Obstacle for Croatia's Development?

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized on June 3rd, 2020 in Zagreb a discussion with the Minister of Public Administration Ivan Malenica and the President of the Croatian County Association Goran Pauk about the importance of territorial organization and efficient public administration, which is primarily achieved through transparency and decentralization. An unavoidable topic was the current coronavirus pandemic, which caused health and economic problems, but also led to the accelerated digitalization of the society.

Croatia nad the WB6-States - EU Perspectives of Montenegro and North Macedonia

In cooperation with the Hybride Warfare Research Institute, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized a video conference on "Croatia and the WB6 States - EU perspectives of Montenegro and North Macedonia." We held the conference in a TV studio with direct involvement and discussion of distinguished guests from Germany, Montenegro and North Macedonia. With Norbert Beckmann-Dierkes, PhD and Florian Feyerabend we discussed the German views on the EU enlargement policy 🇪🇺 for the Western Balkans, while with guests from Montenegro and North Macedonia, Prof. Vasko Naumovski, PhD; Prof. Vasko Stamevski, PhD; Prof. Veton Latifi, PhD and Prof. Miodrag Vuković, PhD, we talked about current political developments in those countries and challenges on their path towards European integration.

Intra-party elections of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)

The intra-party elections of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) will take place on Sunday, March 15th, 2020. For the first time, party members will elect a president, a vice president and a deputy president using the "one member, one vote" model. The current President of HDZ and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Croatian Parliament and former Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Miro Kovač are competing for the party presidency. Tomo Medved and Ivan Penava are candidates for the deputy chairman, while the candidates for the vice-president are: Zdravka Bušić, Branko Bačić, Ivan Anušić, Oleg Butković, Davor Ivo Stier, Milijan Brkić, Božo Galić, Tomislav Tolušić, Ivan Kujundžić, Hrvoje Tomasović and Anita Šimić Bitunjac.

Congress of women entrepreneurs

Croatia and Southeast Europe 2020

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized on March 8th, 2019, on World Women's Day, an international congress on "Women and Entrepreneurship in Southeast Europe" with the "Center for Women Entrepreneurs" led by the former KAS scholarship holder, Ms. Sanela Dropulić. Women entrepreneurs from numerous Countries in Southeast Europe discussed the lack of support of the state for women in the business sector, the importance of leadership in business, the different business communication in women entrepreneurship, the strengthening of female entrepreneurship in the region and their better networking among women.

We learned lessons from the past: Migration policy must be shaped at the EU level – emphasized Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the German Minister of Defence and Chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) on Thursday, March 5th, 2020 during a discussion in Zagreb organized by the Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung for Croatia and Slovenia.

Sharing Economy in Croatia and other European Countries

TALKING EUROPE II – 2019-2020

On February 27th, 2020, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized with the Institute for Social Sciences "Ivo Pilar" in Zagreb as part of the "Talking Europe" event series a conference on " Sharing Economy in Croatia and other European countries”. Prof. Christoph Lutz, PhD, from the Norwegian Business School BI presented his extensive research on Sharing Economy platforms, in which he analyzed the views of users of those platforms on existing regulations and necessary changes. The focus was on examples of regulatory differences between European countries.

"Political Academy" of the ZHDZ: Winterschool

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized together with the with the Croatian Statehood Foundation (ZHDZ) from January 17th to 19th, 2020 the usual "interim evaluation" of the 13th generation of the ZHDZ's junior political education program. This weekend seminar always takes place at the end of the first semester of the one-year training course, offers lectures by political stakeholders and serves above all for the evaluation of the training success achieved so far as well as the preparation of the second half of the course.

"Women in Politics" of the ZHDZ

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized together with the Croatian Statehood Foundation (ZHDZ) from January 17th to 19st, 2020 another event of the series: "Women in politics" for young female politicians of the HDZ. As part of the 3-day event, the participants of the weekend seminar discussed with distinguished professors of Croatian universities the emergence of politics and laws, international security policy, the foreign policy of EU, the importance of political communication and the public appearance of female politicians in the media.

Comparison of migration waves of Croats to Germany

"Guest worker migration wave" and "EU migration wave"

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Catholic University of Croatia organized on December 11th, 2019 in Zagreb a conference on Emigration of Croats to Germany from the 1950s until today. In the presence of the Rector of the Catholic University of Croatia, Prof. Dr. Željko Tanjić, the migration researcher, Karolina Novinščak Kölker, from the University of Regensburg discussed with Croatian demography and migration experts and university representatives the comparison of the "guest worker migration wave" and "EU migration wave" of Croats, including the demographic future of Croatia with regard to the great challenge of the emigration of numerous Croatian citizens to Western Europe, especially to Germany.

Security Challenges for Europe

With the "Center for Security Cooperation" (RACVIAC) and the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized in Zagreb the 7th regional conference on the current security policy challenges in Southeast Europe, from December 9th to 11th, 2019. In the presence of the State Secretary Zdravka Bušić and the Director of Multilateral and Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, Mato Škrabalo, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Robert Klinke and the Ambassador of the United States of America, Robert Kohorst, Croatian security experts discussed with colleagues from Europe and the region about the dynamics of Euro-Atlantic integration of the countries of SEE, the characteristics of the geopolitics of the 21st century, as well as future challenges and regional cooperation.
