Democracy in Crisis, Democracy in Change: From Popular Defiance to Citizen Participation

In partnership with L’Observatoire de la fonction publique et de la bonne Gouvernance (OFP) of the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut (USJ), the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) is holding on the 14th of November, 2019, a conference on the challenge of participative democracy in Europe and Lebanon with the participation of politicians, experts and academics from Europe and Lebanon. The conference will take place at the Amphithéâtre Gulbenkian, Bâtiment A, Campus des sciences sociales, rue Huvelin, in Achrafieh from 09:00 am until 18:00 pm. Even today, democracy is still a struggle of citizens against abuses not only in countries with authoritarian rule but also in some Western democracies that are currently experiencing a crisis of representative democracy. Therefore, the conference will tackle the following topics: “Challenges and limits of participatory democracy “, “The Internet at the service of citizen participation”, “Innovative local experiences” and then try to show ways “Towards a real citizen participation in Lebanon”

Workshop

Workshop “Women Economic Empowerment in rural areas”

The workshop will be offered by KAS as part of a series of events to boost women's economic benefits in rural areas. The aim is to promote the participating female entrepreneurs in the areas of financial management, marketing and branding and to network with each other. The theoretical part of the workshop will be complemented by practical exercises in which the participants will present their goods to a broad public.

Call for Applications Research Assistant in Lebanon

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), in cooperation with The Middle East Institute for Research and Strategic Studies (MEIRSS), seeks a full-time research assistant to play a key role in a project dealing with Lebanon’s National Defense Strategy. The aim is to support a research project analyzing the political situation surrounding possible negotiations over a defense strategy, both on a national and regional level.

Press Conference: The public survey on the economic and financial conditions in Lebanon

Between December 4th and December 13th 2018 Statistics Lebanon interviewed on behalf of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) citizens in all governorates and regions of Lebanon on their opinion on the Lebanese economy, the political situation and their financial self-assessment. Co-Working offices and post-crisis support for affected freelancers and entrepreneurs

On August 4th, 2020 a catastrophic explosion hit our beloved country Lebanon, gravely damaging Beirut and its surrounding neighborhoods. The massive explosion caused extensive suffering to the people of the city, tremendous damage to its physical and cultural fabric, and dealt a severe blow to multiple economic sectors, hitting the heart of entrepreneurship, freelancers and digital districts. Over 100,000 businesses were closed and thousands of freelancers lost their laptops and office equipment.

Political Dialogue Program on the Current Situation in Lebanon

MdB Marian Wendt

KAS Lebanon Office accompanied the German MP Marian Wendt on his delegation trip from August 16th to 19th. The explosions destroyed large parts of the Lebanese capital and left the entire country in shock and deep sadness. Following the events of 4 August, MP Wendt visited the country in order to assess the situation on the ground and to talk to representatives from aid organisations, state institutions and political groups involved in the crisis response.

COVID-19 National and Local Responsibilities in Lebanon and Germany

On the 26th of June 2020, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung held an online webinar in cooperation with Democracy Reporting International, aiming to address National and Local Responses and Responsibilities in Lebanon and Germany to COVID-19. The panels included German MdB Marian Wendt of the State of Saxony, MP Elias Hankach from Lebanon, Governor of Baalbek-Hermel Bachir Khodr, Landrat of Traunstein Sigfried Walch and Mayor of Bcharre Freddy Keirouz. The panels were moderated by Mrs. Tania Awad Ghorra.

Public Policy Making on the Local Level

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Lebanon Office (KAS) in collaboration with the Robert Schuman Institute (RSI) organized an online training via Zoom on “Public Policy Making on the Local Level” for 26 young politicians from Lebanon. The training took place on 02.06.2020 with and introductory course, followed by 2 workshop sessions on 03.06.2020. The sessions were held by Mr. Razvan Orasanu.

Social Policy in Times of Civil Unrest and Austerity

Lebanon has been suffering of an ever worsening economic crisis for years, mostly affecting the lower income classes. With the country having seen more than three months of nationwide protests, the imminent deadlines relative to the payment of Eurobonds threaten one of the world’s most indebted economies. In partnership with Maison Du Futur (MdF), the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) held an expert workshop entitled “Social Policy in Times of Civil Unrest and Austerity “on the 28th of February 2020.
