Malaysia wird am 5. Mai 2013 ein neues Parlament wählen. Die Nominierung der Kandidaten findet am 20. April statt, danach beginnt die offizielle Wahlkampfzeit. Dies teilte die Wahlkommission nach einer Sondersitzung am 10. April in Kuala Lumpur im staatlichen Fernsehen mit. Gleichzeitig mit dem föderalen Parlament werden auch die Landesparlamente in 12 von 13 Bundesstaaten neu gewählt. Ausnahme ist der Bundesstaat Sarawak in Ostborneo, wo der nächste Urnengang erst im Jahr 2016 ansteht.

Zwar endet die fünfjährige Amtszeit des aktuellen Parlaments erst im Juni 2013, der Premierminister kann den Zeitpunkt der Parlamentswahlen jedoch beliebig vorverlegen. Die jüngste politische Entwicklung und die öffentliche Stimmungslage ließen viele Beobachter zu der Einschätzung kommen, dass ein frühzeitiger Wahlgang sehr wahrscheinlich ist. Mittlerweile wird auf einen Wahltermin im Herbst oder sogar erst zu Beginn des nächsten Jahres getippt.
