Towards Sustainable Palm Oil Navigating the Political and Scientific Discourses
Roundtable on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
As one of the largest world leader in palm oil trade, Malaysia must respond to the criticisms associating to oil palm. The negative image of palm oil particularly in the European market, can potentially hurt both the conventional and sustainably sourced production of palm oil. Since the EU is the second largest importer behind India that constitutes over 12 percent of Malaysia’s palm oil total export, a mechanism separating the two types of production must be urgently introduced.

This seminar aimed to tackle Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 which seeks to provide quality education, SDG 5 that promotes gender equality, and SDG 10 which purports to reduce inequalities. It is a widely known fact that disparity in gender is largely due to lack of access to education which ultimately affects levels of literacy. Even though in Malaysia, youth literacy as well as adult literacy has significantly improved over the years, there are still concerns on literacy in legal, social and cultural issues.

This conference aims to address the prevailing issues that have hindered the progress on the ratification of International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) in Malaysia. As Malaysia has arrived at a new juncture with the change of the government, the pledge by the newly appointed Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah to push for the signing and the ratification of all the six international human rights conventions is a sign that the new Pakatan Harapan government is serious to promote the principles of inclusiveness, good governance, freedom, human rights and sustainable development. This is in line with the Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto which indicates the government’s efforts to ensure equality, eliminate discrimination in all respects, and criminalise racial and religious hatred in accordance with the Federal Constitution.

The MiDAS – KAS conference was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the Royale Chulan Hotel, 27 – 28 August 2019. This is the official report of the conference proceedings that carried the theme ‘Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief: A Shared Responsibility.’ that attracted more than 300 delegates representing government departments, state government offices, local planning authorities, private consultants, academics, cross-border networks, think tanks and foreign government representatives.
