The Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Institute for Democracy "Societas Civilis" from Skopje would like to present you the 61-st issue of the journal “Political Thought”.

We would be delighted if the current selection of texts by the international editorial team would arouse your interest again. As always, we have tried to focus on debates with a long-term perspective. The topics such as representative democracy, public policy and political culture as well as current contributions from political theory and social developments are social topics that on one hand are current, but on another also long-term interesting for discussion, which we would like to enrich with the current issue.

Strengthening the capacities of the MPs

From 28 to 30 May, KAS organised a three-day seminar for the parliamentary group of VMRO-DPMNE and the Coalition in Ohrid in cooperation with the Party Research and Analytical Center "Ljubisha Georgievski". Numerous Macedonian and German politicians and experts from various fields participated in the hybrid event.

On 19 May, KAS in cooperation with the European Movement in the Republic of North Macedonia and the Delegation of the European Union organized a hybrid event on “The Future of Europe and the Future of the Enlargement” as a final event in this year’s celebration of May 9 – Europe Day.

Why it matters?

On May 12, 2021. online discussion entitled Religion in Education - Why it matters? was held. This discussion was organized in digital format, through the Zoom platform, by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in collaboration with the Association of Professors of Ethics in Religions. Thirty participants, professors on the subject of Ethics in Religions, took part and it was a good opportunity to hear their views on the benefits of having religious education and the status of the subject itself in anticipation of the announced reforms in education.

9 May – Europe Day

On 27 April 2021, an online student debate on the topic "I have something to say about my future" was held on the occasion of 9 May, Europe Day. KAS organised the event in cooperation with the European Movement in the Republic of North Macedonia and the Delegation of the European Union in the Republic of North Macedonia. With 40 students from several universities in the country participating, the debate was an excellent opportunity to hear what kind of society young people want to live in.

On 16 April, KAS organized an online discussion on the topic "Club of Youth or Club for Youth? Where Should the Focus be?" in cooperation with the Parliamentary Club for Youth Issues and Policies. The discussion took place in the framework of the event "Political Leadership of the Future: Challenges for Youth in a Post-COVID-19 Society”.

EU-Beitrittsperspektive Nordmazedoniens nach den Wahlen in Bulgarien

Wann werden die Gespräche mit Skopje weitergeführt?

Die Hoffnungen in Nordmazedonien auf eine zügige Weiterführung der Gespräche mit Sofia nach den Parlamentswahlen vom 4. April scheint sich nicht zu erfüllen. Damit sinkt auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass Bulgarien seine Blockade der EU-Beitrittsverhandlungen bis zum Sommer aufheben wird.

North Macedonia’s accession process to the EU and the role of the European Parliament

On 15th of April KAS and IDSCS organized the online conference titled “North Macedonia’s accession process to the EU and the role of the European Parliament”.

The conference aimed to encourage the discussion on the role and participation of legislatures in the process of accession to the European Union, with particular reference to the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, and its relationship with the European Parliament.
