Wits Journalism

Wits Journalism
Wits Journalism is a programme for aspirant as well as working journalists. Located in the media metropolis Johannesburg it is well placed to work closely with the industry and working professionals to ensure a centre of teaching, training, research and public engagement. The department is steeped in a tradition of independent, critical and quality journalism. Courses are taught by journalists with many years of experience and seniority in the profession.

Wits Radio Academy
The Wits Radio Academy is a new centre for training, research and public engagement in the field of radio. Based at the University of the Witwatersrand, the academy aims to make a special contribution to the development of radio in South Africa and beyond, with a particular focus on community radio.

Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI)

Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI)
The Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI) provides legal defence to journalists, bloggers and independent media across the world. Since its inception MLDI has funded the defence of hundreds of journalists and secured 'wins' in the vast majority of cases. It has also won strategically important judgments on issues such as the protection of journalists sources and the 'balance' between privacy and the right of freedom of expression. It has also helped build a number of legal defence units in national organisations.
