7th Asian-European Editors Forum - India-China-Japan: The New Power-Triangle in Asia

edited by Werner vom Busch and Tobias Rettig

This book brings together a collection of presentations and discussions derived from the 7th Asian-European Editors’ Forum. Held in Singapore from 05 to 08 October 2006, and organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in co-operation with The Straits Times, the contributions primarily discuss the phenomenal rise of China and India as major regional if not even global powers, and the potential geopolitical implications.

The Forum was inaugurated by Singapore’s Prime Minister, H.E. Lee Hsien Loong, with a Keynote Speech on ‘Singapore’s View of the New Powers to be in Asia’. The next four contributions are by leading academics (Prof. Dr. Wang Gungwu, Dr. Lam Peng Er), editors (Mr. Ravindra Kumar), journalists (Mr. Janadas Devan), and businessmen (Mr. Joachim Ihrcke). They assess how the rise of China and India is likely to affect the economic and political balance of power in the region. The speakers and delegates also critically engage with some of the potential domestic and international problems associated with rapid economic growth and social change. A leading editor’s (Suthichai Sae-Yoon) overview of the 1 October 2006 coup in Thailand supplements this publication.
