“Google, Facebook and Co. - Regulation of Digital Platforms” - Adenauer Lecture with Dr. Wolfgang Kreißig - Media Programme Southeast Europe
Lecture
Details
The way people use media has changed massively in recent years. More and more people are getting information from large internet platforms and social networks such as Facebook or Twitter. However, these do not create independent editorial content, but only offer publications from other media. In addition, disinformation and fake news spread in a targeted and massive manner via social networks. Therefore, the regulatory framework for online platforms needs to be deepened. In his lecture, Dr. Kreisig will address the particular challenges of regulating digital platforms and present the current status of regulation in Germany.
Dr. Wolfgang Kreißig has been elected President of the Baden-Württemberg State Communications Institute since 2017 and Chairman of the Directors' Conference of all state media regulatory authorities since 2020. The media regulatory institutions are responsible for the admission and supervision of private radio and television channels in Germany and check compliance with advertising rules and the provisions on the protection of minors. Since the introduction of the new State Media Treaty in Germany, they have also been responsible for regulating media platforms.
The lecture will take place in Launchee Studio (Central Department Store Sofia (ZUM), bul. Knyaginya Mariya Luiza, Sofia, Bulgaria) and is going to be broadcasted simultaneously via zoom.
The Adenauer Lecture is organised once per semester by the KAS Media Programme South East Europe in cooperation with the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication of the Sofia University, featuring leading journalists from Germany, that talk about current challenges in the media sector.
