“Strategies against disinformation and propaganda”

Desinformation and propaganda have the potential to erode trust, exacerbate societal divides, and hinder political engagement. Over the past few years, the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine have accelerated the dissemination of misinformation. In response to this challenge, numerous countries have been developing strategies to address this issue. Notably, the European Union has implemented crucial regulations, including the Digital Services Act, and is actively pursuing additional initiatives such as the Media Freedom Act. It is necessary for the democratic societies to develop strategies to fight the spread of disinformation and propaganda while upholding the principles of free speech and independent journalism.

Bucharest: Presentation of „ABC des Journalismus“ in Romanian and Adenauer-Lecture with Dr. Christopher Nehring

On 27th of October 2022, the KAS Media Programme for South East Europe presented the Romanian translation of the German reference book "ABC of Journalism" at the University of Bucharest. After Albanian and Bulgarian, this is the third language in which the well-known book has been translated by the Media Programme. The book presentation was followed by an Adenauer-Lecture by Dr. Christopher Nehring, guest lecturer of the Media Programme at Sofia University. The topic of his lecture was: "Disinformation: From the Cold War to the War in Ukraine".

Sofia: Presentation of „ABC des Journalismus“ in Bulgarian and lecture with Alexander Andreev

The KAS Media Programme for South East Europe presented the German handbook "ABC des Journalismus", translated into Bulgarian, in two events in Sofia on 20 and 21 October 2022. The events were hosted by the University of National and World Economy and the New Bulgarian University. The presentation of the books in both universities was combined with a lecture by Alexander Andreev, the former head of the Bulgarian editorial office at Deutsche Welle in Bonn.

In cooperation with the Media Programme for South East Europe of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the first Vaclav Havel Forum took place on 20th of September in Sofia. The conference brought together experts from different European countries to discuss the future of their continent.

Second Cadenabbia Leadership Summit for public broadcasters in cooperation with the EBU

The event at Villa la Collina on Lake Como (former summer residence of German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer) from 18-21 September brought together twelve directors general and deputy directors general of public service media from Southeast Europe, Ukraine as well as the Baltic States, and once again created a discussion platform for current and future challenges for executives of public service media.

12th BIRN Summer School of Investigative Reporting

The traditional summer school for investigative journalism of the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN), supported by the KAS Media Programme, took place this year from 22 to 28 August 2022 in Portoroz, Slovenia. It brought together 30 journalists from Southeast and Central European countries. The participants had the opportunity to develop their journalistic skills, learn new techniques and expand their international network.

Tribute to David Harris, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, in Sofia

David Harris bid farewell to his colleagues and friends in Bulgaria as longstanding CEO of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) during a special programme in the Sofia Synagogue on 1 August. AJC Sofia and "Shalom", the organisation of Jews in Bulgaria, organised the programme in cooperation with the KAS Media Programme South East Europe.

Scholars' Annual Meeting: The war in Ukraine - media and society

Summer School of Political Communication 2022

For the fourth time after a two-year break, the KAS Media Programme together with the Sofia Security Forum invited ten PR and communication experts from governments, political parties, and the public sector from Southeast Europe to the Summer School for Political Communication. It took place from the 4th to the 8th of July 2022 in Varna, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Global Media Forum: Reporting on the Russian war in Ukraine – Perspectives from the Balkans

On 21. June, the KAS-Media Programme for South East Europe hosted an online discussion within the DW Global Media Forum 2022 in Bonn on the topic “Reporting on the Russian war in Ukraine – Perspectives from the Balkans”.

Second Reporter Slam in South East Europe

The KAS Media Programme for South East Europe, in cooperation with the organisations "Funky Citizens" and "Reporter Slam", organised for the second time a so-called Reporter Slam - a stage format for journalists, originated and famous for in Germany. This year in Romania, Bucharest.
