Securing and implementing media freedom in Europe

First session of the Art. 10 ECHR Working Group

In a number of Eastern and South East European countries, considerable deficits exist in the legal provisions on regulating and securing media freedom.

Art. 10 of the European Human Rights Convention (EHCR) which guarantees the freedom of expression and media is only insufficiently implemented. In order to achieve a sustainable improvement of this situation, a transnational working group will be established which will include media lawyers and experts from the Europa-Universität Viadrina (Frankfurt/ Oder, Germany), the University of Pecs (Hungary), the University of Sofia (Bulgaria) as well as the University of Belgrade (Serbia).

The aim of the new network will be to ensure comprehensive safeguards for media freedom in accordance with Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), particularly in the countries in Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
