Crisis of Democracy? The Role of Political Parties in the Year of Global Elections 2024

A roundtable event on the importance of political parties and electoral developments for Global Europe (2024-2029)

Political parties play a vital role in consolidating democracy by acting as intermediaries between the public and government, organizing diverse viewpoints, and fostering policy debates. They ensure accountability through electoral competition and promote political participation. However, modern challenges like resource shortages and ideological rifts hinder their effectiveness, leading to the rise of new parties addressing contemporary issues. An upcoming roundtable, organized with a focus on the democracy promotion agenda by the new EU Commission, brings global party representatives together to share experiences and strengthen democratic governance. Focusing on the 2024 elections in several countries, this event will promote collaboration, mutual learning, and international dialogue on democracy promotion.
