Launch of the EU cofinanced project "My rights as a woman and Namibian citizen!" - Foundation Office Namibia and Angola
Event
Details
Two decades after independence a lot of progress has been made regarding the equality of women and men in Namibian society, but a number of shortcomings still need to be overcome. Figures show that there is a shortfall of women in decision-making positions, largely due to the lack of awareness on women’s human and socio-economic rights, as espoused by the Namibian Constitution and other relevant instruments such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
The project, co-financed with €300.000 under the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR), aims to:
- Empower Women with the necessary skills and knowledge on how to advance and uphold their human and civil rights, and as a result, increase their participation in all spheres of society, especially at leadership level.
- Raise awareness on gender and women's human rights among socio-political leaders, representatives of state agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
The goal is to train several thousand Namibian women and men throughout the country's 13 regions. WAD’s Community Voices, who are represented in all 107 constituencies, will be trained to be trainers themselves. The Ministry of Gender Equality & Child Welfare's 13 liaison officers, will be also involved in this activity.
KAS and WAD are very grateful for the support of the Ministry of Gender Equality & Child Welfare, the University of Namibia’s Faculty of Law and the Legal Assistance Centre, who will provide trainers and co-produce training manuals, posters, pamphlets and other material.
