Declarations on Their Own Won’t Change the Course

25 years after the Beijing Conference on Women’s rights

In 1995, the 4th World Conference on Women was held in Beijing, China. This year, we are not only celebrating the 25th anniversary of the conference, but also the 75th anniversary of the UN which has a pivotal role in upholding human rights and women’s rights. Hence, the United Nations General Assembly had decided to hold a high-level meeting on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the 4th World Conference on Women just after the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Die Ziele der Nachhaltigen Entwicklung in Zeiten der Globalen Pandemie

Eine Bestandsaufnahme zur Agenda 2030 während der diesjährigen UN-Vollversammlung offenbart große Herausforderungen für die Weltgemeinschaft.

Zwei hochrangige multilaterale Konferenzen anläßlich der diesjähren 75. Sitzung der Vollversammlung der Vereinten Nationen (VN), der SDG-Moment und das Treffen der Staats- und Regierungstreffen zu Financing for Development, unternahmen den Versuch einer Bestandsaufnahme der Agenda 2030. Das Bild, das sie von der momentanen Situation zeichneten ist verstörend; jedoch gab sich die Weltgemeinschaft entschlossen, dem allgemeinen Pessimismus entgegenzutreten. Alle beteiligten Staaten und Institutionen riefen zu globaler Kooperation und Solidarität auf. Pünktlich zu ihrem 75. Geburtstag scheint die Stunde der Wahrheit für die Weltorganisation gekommen zu sein: Es herrscht Einigkeit, dass die VN und das multilaterale System niemals in ihrer Geschichte vor einer größeren Herausforderung standen. „COVID-19 hat die Grundfeste unserer Welt bis ins Mark erschüttert“ konstatierte Generalsekretär António Guterres.

UNGA2020 – die Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen

75. Jubiläumsjahr im COVID-19-Kontext

Die 75. Generalversammlung wurde sowohl beim eigentlichen Jubiläumstag als auch in der Generaldebatte zu einem weiteren Schauplatz des Schlagabtausches zwischen China und den USA. In den Redebeiträgen wie auch in der politischen Erklärung der 193 Mitgliedstaaten wurde - abgesehen von wenigen Ausnahmen - deutlich, dass heute mehr denn je Einsicht in die Notwendigkeit der multilateralen Zusammenarbeit besteht. Es wird allerdings auch weiterer Reformbedarf artikuliert, um die globalen Governance-Strukturen an aktuelle Herausforderungen anzupassen.

To this end, IOE and KAS joined forces to host a series of virtual conferences to explore opportunities for partnerships between United Nations Resident Coordinators (UNRCs) and IOE member organisations and their company affiliates with a view to enhancing cooperation for the delivery of the 2030 Agenda, as well as measures to address the socio-economic impact of COVID-19.
