The effects of the crisis are also painful noticeably for the citizens in the rich countries. But for the developing countries they could be much more dramatic.

Nigeria's (public) budgets depend on oil more than 90 %. These earnings have declined a lot since the price for oil dropped during the crisis and the production/extraction goes down because of the bomb attacks in the Niger Delta. Owing to the crisis, the foreign direct investments will decline as well as the international preparedness to give development aid.

In this condition, how can the country achieve the Millennium Developing Goals which depend especially on governmental expenses, like combat against poverty and hunger, education, reduction of child mortality, improvement of the state of health of mothers, the struggle against AIDS, Malaria and other serious diseases, without even thinking about the protection of the environment?

On the occasion of the first Abuja-Roundtable, the KAS has invited, together with its partner Centre for Policy and Economic Research, outstanding experts on this topic.

The special commissioner of the president, Amina Az-Zubair, will be talking about the effects on the Millennium Developing Goals and the former deputy president of the Central Bank, Dr. Obadiah Mailafiah, will consider the economic consequences. This event will be moderated by the resident representative of the KAS in Nigeria, Dr. Klaus Pähler. The summary is given by the responsible country consultant of the KAS, Andrea Kolb.

The Roundtable will be the beginning of a new economic and sociopolitical event series of the KAS, which will be held quarterly in Abuja. This reputable event will be dealing with the economic and social development of the country.
