The Millennium Development Goals - The Role of State Houses of Assembly

Retreat for the Houses of Assembly of Cross River, Lagos, Ogun and Plateau States

Whether the Millennium Goals will be reached in 2015 or 2020, plays no big role for Nigeria. The most important fact is that there is at all a visible progress. What can KAS partner parliaments contribute in their various states to this progress?

Details

Nigeria is in multi-dimensional crises. Terrorism especially in the North poses a great danger to the stability of the whole country. Gross inequality of access to means of survival of all forms, the vast amount of corruption and a totally inadequate infrastructure are only some of the numerous problems. The over 7% growth rate that is often quoted has not led to a development that could solve these problems.

In view of these circumstances, the question of whether there is at least a visible progress and whether the Millennium Development Goals can be reached, at least partially, is urgent. The KAS partner parliaments will look into this question and deliberate on what they can contribute in the remaining part of their legislative period which will end by 2015.
