Nigerian troops have been deployed for numerous peace missions in Africa under UN or African Union mandate. They often contributed to a control of violent conflicts.

In the country, the armed forces are deployed in the context of elections, in the Niger Delta, and especially in the so called Middle Belt and the northern part of the country for the improvement of the fragile internal security, because the police force is not capable to control the situation.

Additionally, the armed forces are in the process of transformation. As former instrument of government during the military rule, they now have to find their role in democracy.

KAS and its partner IMPACT, have been supporting the armed forces for many years. A good success was recorded during the violent conflicts in Kaduna after the elections. Although hundreds of people died during the riots, the number of victims might have been even higher without the KAS training shortly before. A colonel called during the riots to thank KAS for training its officers on the concept of “necessary minimum force”.
