“Can you really contribute to transformation in a difficult country like Nigeria?” This is a question we are asked frequently and we also ask ourselves. Certainly we are convinced that our steady work contributes to gradual change.

But for us, believing is not enough. Therefore, we evaluate our work systematically with scientific methods. Recently, our cooperation with Nigerian State Parliaments was evaluated by a German scientist – with a positive result.

In 2010, we familiarized colleagues of our partner organizations with the main features of project management. These are often called “logframe”: Terms like hierarchies of objectives, framework conditions, indicators for the achievement of objectives etc. have been explained.

In this seminar, the focus will be on monitoring results - control of success. Donors not only want to know, if supported interventions are executed properly, but even more if these interventions indeed contribute to intended results.

Development policy changed its perspective in the last years clearly from focusing on inputs towards an analysis of results; this means, actual achievements. Unfortunately, it is much more difficult to identify results of projects in the realm of political education and policy advice than in the construction of roads, e.g.

It is rather easy to determine if 120 km of new roads have been constructed and are used now, or if funds were lost “somewhere”. To determine however, if the Nigerian population improved its knowledge about the functioning of their democracy, and if this knowledge is used for subsequent voting-decisions, is not so easy.

This is why we train those of our partners, who are in charge of projects.
