Seminar on Effective Legislation and Oversight of the Security Sector for Committee on National Security and Intelligence

Support to the SSR in Nigeria

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is cooperating with Nigeria’s House of Representatives’ Committee on National Security and Intelligence to organize a two-day seminar/retreat on effective legislation and oversight of Nigeria’s security sector, for the leadership and members of the committee on ways of improving effective legislation and oversight of the security sector. The parliamentarians will be joined by the heads and senior officials of the various agencies being supervised by the committee.

Details

This retreat is targeted at fostering better cooperation between members of the committees and the security agencies they have oversight functions over including the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Department for State Services (DSS), Nigeria Intelligence Agency, (NIA) the Presidential Fleet, among others. For the parliamentarians, it will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of effective legislation, as well as the intricacies of monitoring and conducting oversight of agencies in the security sector. It will further boost the ability of the parliamentarians to make valuable proactive contributions to the operations of the relevant agencies and enhance the exchange of information / ideas on ongoing initiatives towards improving accountability, interagency collaboration and coordination. It will also expose both the parliamentarians and heads of agencies to ways of promoting efficiency and synergy towards overcoming the current security threats in Nigeria. The retreat is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to the Security Sector Reform in Nigeria. This program is funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
