With a weekly, one hour airing of “Vision Nigeria” in Enugu, Kaduna and Port Harcourt, there are wide ranges of topics, in relation to the long term development policy issues as well as current political events. In June 2012, KAS and partners will focus on these topics:

IN ENUGU PATRICK ENYOGAI: (Fridays 1- 2 PM at Coal city 92.8 FM) -Democratic Stability and it’s impact on the Promotion of Human Rights. (June 1st) Dr. F. Asogwa, a lecturer from Enugu State talks about the Implication of Nigeria’s Civilian to Civilian Handover. Here a comparison will be drawn between the civilian and military rules. How Human Rights issues were affected in these periods. Also civilian rule will be highlighted and analyzed if it has positively impacted on the rights of the citizens and to what extent. This includes the freedom of the press, civil society, stability, the independence of the judiciary, as well as rule of law and the constitutional process.

-Reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality Rate in Nigeria. (June 8th) Mrs. Vera Chukwu A., from Enugu State, a Director of Nursing Services discusses the challenges and prospects of reducing the mortality rate. How far have points 4 (Reduce child Morality) and 5 (Improve Maternal Health) of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) been achieved in Nigeria? She will be addressing the issue of reducing child mortality, improving maternal health. The Infant mortality rate in Nigeria is at 74 deaths per 1000 live births, and the Maternal mortality rate at 840 deaths per 100,000 live births. The MDGs should be achieved by 2015 and a UN report states that Nigeria has achieved less than 5% of goal 5. Mrs. Vera Chukwu will discuss the issues as they currently are and determine the possibility or not of Nigeria to achieve these goals by 2015.

-Control of Supply of Hard Substances and Drugs as a Strategy for Curbing Criminal and Violent Behaviours in Youth. (June 15th) Barrister Chijioke Okpe, a Lawyer also from Enugu State will discuss the correlation between the youth’s access to hard drug substances and their exhibition of violent behaviour. The premise being presented here is that relevant agencies can cut off the supply of these substances and make them inaccessible to the youth. This may in return lead to a reduction in their involvement in criminal acts. Barrister Chijoke Okpe will come up with strategies and approaches to achieve this.

-Effects of Global Climate Change and its implications for Nigeria. (June 22nd) Mr. James Ogwa, a Human Rights Advocate discusses the issues of global climate change and its rippling effect on Nigeria. The discussion will also review Nigeria’s coping as well as adaptation measures. This includes a variety of factors such as food security, poverty, power, housing, health and transport. -Maintaining Energy Efficiency. A Strategy for Promoting Industrialization in Nigeria. (June 29th) Mr. Harold Eya, a lawyer and industrialist will discuss about efficient and consistent electricity generation and distribution and how it has a parallel relationship to a nation’s development. It would reduce the cost of production, encourage investment as well as boost employment and the standard of living. The discussion will look at alternative means of generating electricity as well as come up with other solutions.

YANWAIDI ZWAHU IN KADUNA: (Thursdays 5 – 6 PM at Capital Sound 90.9 FM) The farming season for 2012 is just around the corner. The idea is to get the government to speak to the people on its level of preparedness to facilitate the activities of the seasons. The aim is also to get the public informed and interested enough to monitor the process; for a lot depends on the farming season. On June 7th Mr. Shadrach Madlion, an Agricultural Consultant and CEO discusses the challenges for the 2012 Cropping Season. On June 14th, 21st and 28, members of the State Ministry of Agriculture and the Farmers’ Cooperative Society discuss the Kaduna State Government plans for the 2012 farming season; the farmers themselves speak out the issues as they see them and State of Farming Inputs.

COLINS IMOH IN PORT HARCOURT: (Thursdays 3 – 4 PM Rivers 99.1 FM) -Sustaining our Cultural Heritage for National Development. On June 7th Dr. Joseph Fanila talks about the importance of acknowledging cultural heritage amongst Nigerians for further development of the nation. On June 14th Rev. Dr. Joseph Ali discusses Culture and Youth: Preparing Young Persons for the Future. On June 21st Dr. H. Adigwe, and educationist will converse about Educational Malpractice: The Bane of Development. Whilst on June 28th Dr. Cally Cussons will confer about Sustaining our Education: The role of Stakeholders.
