Seminar on Enhancing the Role of Parliamentary Committees in Fostering Interagency Collaboration through Effective Security Sector Legislation

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is cooperating with Nigeria’s House of Representatives’ Committee on Army to organize a two-day seminar for the leadership and members of the various committees on the security agencies in the House of Representatives. The seminar, which is a follow up to initial seminars organized by KAS for members of these committees, aims at enhancing the capacity of chairmen, deputy chairmen and members of the committees to evaluate the overlapping mandates in the laws of the various security agencies and work out ways of reviewing the laws to eliminate or reduce interagency rivalry and conflicts.

Interagency Collaboration among Security Agencies in the North-East Zone

KAS is cooperating with Nigeria’s House of Representatives’ Committee on Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to organize a four-day training workshop for middle-level officers of security agencies in the North-East geopolitical zone on promoting interagency collaboration and operational effectiveness. The workshop which will hold in Bauchi, Bauchi State, is for officers drawn mainly from operations, public relations, peace and conflict resolution departments from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Immigrations Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, the NSCDC among others from Bauchi, Gombe and Yobe States.

KAS Nigeria successfully organized a two-days high level international conference with the theme “Tackling Security Challenges in West Africa: Embracing Coordination and Cooperation”, which was held on 16 and 17 July 2019, in Abuja, Nigeria. KAS Nigeria partnered with Nigeria’s House of Representative’ Committee on Army to organize the conference with funding from the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Themen waren u.a. die wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit, die Bekämpfung des Terrorismus in Nigeria und neueste Entwicklungen im Energie- und Klimabereich.

Abgeordnete und Mitarbeiter verschiedener Regionalparlamente aus Nigeria besuchten vom 16. bis 22. Oktober 2016 Berlin, Hessen und Rheinland-Pfalz. April setzte die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in Nigeria die Serie von Runden Tischen zu aktuell politischen Themen, die seit 2014 sehr erfolgreich ist, mit einer zweiten Veranstaltung im Jahr 2015 fort.Im Zentrum der Diskussion stand die Frage, wie die nigerianischen Medien und zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen den Dialog mit den neu gewählten Regierungen auf überregionaler und lokaler Ebene erfolgreich gestalten können. Als Diskussionsgrundlage diente ein einführender Vortrag von Dr. Otive Igbuzor, dem geschäftsführenden Direktor des Centre-LSD.
