Regional Cooperation in the Western Balkans on the Road to EU and NATO

The exchange of experiences and mutual cooperation in the countries of the Western Balkans, countries whose traditions and culture are close and which share similar tendencies in their development, plays an essential role in meeting the standards required for their accession to the European Union and NATO. Guided by the intention to provide the space for an ever wider promotion of the role of regional cooperation in the Western Balkans in the process of its integration in Euro-Atlantic structures, we dedicate this issue of Political Thought exactly to this subject matter.

Political Thought has thus thoughtfully accompanied Macedonia (and its neighboring region)on the long and ever complicated process of democratic transformation and Europeanisation. This is the very reason that we have chosen a topic for this anniversary issue that has been central to all previous editions of Political Thought throughout these seven years, but never exclusively dealt with, a topic that represents the very foundation of every democratic regime: civil society.

In der Hauptstadt Mazedoniens ist die Freude über die Empfehlung Brüssels groß, Beitrittsverhandlungen mit Skopje aufzunehmen. Der mazedonischen Regierung unter Premier Gruevski gilt Anerkennung für ihre Reformbemühungen - auch inmitten der Wirtschaftskrise - und die Erfüllung zahlreicher Vorbedingungen, um diesen positiven Bescheid zu erhalten. Jetzt muss sie die Euphorie im Land und die neue politische Konstellation in Griechenland nutzen, um den leidigen Namensstreit beizulegen und ein Datum für die Aufnahme der Beitrittsgespräche zu bekommen.

Bundestagswahl 2009

Mit Interesse hat das politische Mazedonien das Wahlergebnis der Bundestagswahlen vom 27. September zur Kenntnis genommen. Die Kontinuität der bilateralen Beziehungen mit einem von Bundeskanzlerin Merkel weiter regierten Deutschland wurde sowohl von Regierungsvertretern als auch den politischen Partnern (bisher inoffiziell) begrüßt. Allerdings sind sowohl die hiesigen Entscheidungsträger als auch die Öffentlichkeit gespannt, wie sich der voraussichtliche Wechsel des Koalitionspartners der Union auf die Außen- und insbesondere Europapolitik Berlins auswirken werden.
