Palestinians: Conditions in Gaza better than in the West Bank

Palestinian Public Opinion Poll No (45), September 2012

With positive evaluation of the performance of the Fayyad government declining sharply, satisfaction with President Abbas decreasing, and popularity of Fatah in the West Bank significantly dropping, a larger percentage of Palestinians evaluates, for the first time since the split in 2007, more positively conditions in the Gaza Strip over conditions in the West Bank at a time when more than three quarters believe that protests in the West Bank will continue and escalate.

The continuous erosion of democratic structures in the West Bank

More than 70 percent of the Palestinians in the West Bank believe that the Palestinian Authority (PA) is undemocratic and illiberal.

Widespread popular anger in West Bank after arrest of journalists and blocking of internet sites

Palestinian Public Opinion Poll No (44)

Popularity of Fatah and President Abbas drops in light of widespread popular opposition to the arrest of journalists and perceived restrictions on freedoms and in light of the failure to form a reconciliation government, but the popularity of Hamas and its Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh rises in light of the results of the Egyptian elections and the decision to allow the Election Commission to begin voters' registration in the Gaza Strip.
