Support for Hamas Is Declining

A new poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) in the West Bank and Gaza shows that a overwhelming majority is in favour of early elections, while the public satisfaction with Hamas is declining.

Fifth Issue of the Newsletter “Nazaha/Integrity” Published

The fifth edition of the newsletter “Nazaha/Integrity” is discussing the role of the citizen in the fight against corruption in the NGO-sector and the NGOs’ quest to strengthen transparency in the public sector. Other issues concerning integrity, transparency and accountability within the NGO-sector in Palestine are being raised as well. The newsletter is published regularly in the framework of the Nazaha project.

After the clash between Hamas and Fatah and the subsequent takeover of Hamas in Gaza, Swat Al-Nissa poses the questions where the situation would lead to and who would be able to cease the conflict in Gaza. In addition, the magazine deals with the 30.000 Palestinians without an ID Card and that subsequently live without the sense of belonging to a certain national identity. Finally, the magazine shows the dilemma of the break out of the internal conflict between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza: While Palestinian Women are struggling for their equality, the internal conflict is another factor that weakens their efforts.

Report about the Current Legal Situation of NGOs in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories

The Nazaha Project aims at combating corruption and bribery among the Palestinian NGOs in order to enable these NGOs to function as a watchdog in the society.In the framework of the Nazaha-project, a report concerning the legal basis for enhancing integrity and the fight against corruption within the Palestinian NGO-sector was compiled in cooperation with the legal expert Fatima al-Moa’qat.

On the occasion of the 50th memorial day of Al-Nakba, the magazine writes about the historical event of Al-Nakba (1948) and Al-Naksah (1967) and its meaning to the Palestinian society. The catastrophes for the Palestinian population were both harmful and tragic, the journal concludes. In addition, Sawt Al-Nissa writes about the internal clashes between Hamas and Fatah and its consequences for the unity government.

Visit of Dr. Jürgen Rüttgers, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia to the Palestinian Autonomous Territories

In the framework of his second journey to Israel and the Palestinian Autonomous Territories, Dr. Jürgen Rüttgers, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited Bethlehem and Ramallah on May 18-19, 2007.In Bethlehem, the Prime Minister could get a picture of the difficult situation in Jesus’ native town, affected by the Israeli security barrier and a low number of tourists.

Visit of the German-Arab Parliamentarian Group to the Palestinian Autonomous Territories

The parliamentarian group “Arabic-speaking states of the Middle East” of the German Bundestag visited, under the direction of their chairman Dr. Joachim Hörster, the Palestinian Autonomous Territories on May 3rd and 4th, 2007. During a conversation with representatives of the German political foundations in Ramallah and East-Jerusalem, the parliamentarians discussed the domestic political situation in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories and the future of the peace process, as well as the work of the German foundations on the ground.

Visit of the Prime Minister of the Freestate of Saxony, Prof. Dr. Georg Milbradt, to the Palestinian Autononomous Territ

In the course of his journey to the Holy Land, Prof. Dr. Georg Milbradt, Prime Minister of the Freestate of Saxony, visited the Palestinian Autonomous Territories and Arabic East-Jerusalem, on Mai 2nd, 2007.During a meeting with the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, Milbradt emphasized his “big respect” for the Arab peace initiative. President Abbas confirmed the importance of this initiative, which enables Israel to live in an “ocean of peace”.

The international labors day is the subject of this edition of Sawt Al-Nissa, especially the rights of working woman. In this context, the magazine also addresses the problem of discrimination in public service and the legal shelter of child labor. After examining the working situation in Palestine, Sawt Al-Nissa criticizes that the current working situation in the country favors men over women.
