Details

Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, President of the European Parliament ret. and Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, visited the Palestinian Territories last week.

In Gaza, he met with Palestinian families still living in UNRWA shelters as well as representatives of the Christian community to get a sense of the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Robert Turner, UNRWA Director of Operations in Gaza, affirmed during his briefing the urgency for funding to advance the reconstruction process. Dr. Pöttering was highly concerned by the continuing travel restrictions imposed on the population in Gaza, which is particularly depressing for the young generation.

In the West Bank, Dr. Pöttering met with Chief Palestinian Negotiator, Dr. Saeb Erekat, in Jericho and Prime Minister Dr. Rami Hamdallah in Ramallah to discuss the current stalemate in the peace process and lack of progress in the reconciliation government. He complimented Dr. Erekat and Dr. Hamdallah on their continuous diplomatic efforts and encouraged them to continue on their path, reaffirming the support of the KAS.
