Members of the German Journalist Union (DJU) visit the Palestinian Territories

Within the framework of a an informative journey to Israel and the Palestinian Autonomous Territories, 15 members of the DJU obtained an insight into the political situation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as well as the work of the local media.

During a briefing by Xavier Abu Eid, Communication Adviser of the Palestinian Negotiation Support Unit (NSU), the journalists learned about the problematic issues of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the separation barrier, the Jerusalem question and the Annapolis peace process.

Subsequently, KAS organized a meeting with Raffiq Husseini, chief of staff of president Abbas, who gave a review about the status quo of the peace process with Israel as well as the problems concerning the internal split between Fatah and Hamas, with special regard to the forthcoming election in January 2010. Furthermore Husseini expressed the hope of a stronger EU engagement in political processes within the Middle East.

In a final encounter with Alaa Karajeh from the Media Monitoring Unit of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH), the members of the DJU were informed about the situation of media in the Palestinian Territories, its reliability and acceptance within the Palestinian society. The Media Monitoring Unit analyses different media in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with focus on balanced and independent reporting. In this context Alaa Karajeh also pointed out the hope for a more comprehensive reporting about the Middle East conflict in western media.
