The 5th year anniversary celebration of the De La Salle University

(DLSU)-Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI) held on

November 24 (Wednesday) at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental was a

success with nearly 100 representatives in attendance. Co-sponsored by the

DSLU-AKI and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the event “Reflections on

Philippine Development Challenges and Governance,” drew eminent

representatives from the academe (e.g., Dr. Gerardo Sicat, University of the

Philippines), business (e.g., Donald Dee, International Trade Relations and

Sergio Ortiz-Luis, Philippine Exporters Confederation), government (Edgardo

Angara, Senate of the Philippines), Jose de Venecia, Jr., House of

Representatives, Romulo Neri, National Economic and Development Authority),

media (Ricardo Puno, ABS-CBN) and civil society (Antonio Asper, Federation

of Free Workers) who shared their insights on various topics relating to the

challenges of governance and reform, political leadership, social

responsibility, innovation, and the need for social consensus. Their

experience and expertise provided an incisive perspective on these important

issues and some areas for reform as a way forward for the country under the

theme of “social partnership and forward-looking leadership.” The Institute

with funding support from KAF will publish these reflection papers next

year.

The book entitled, “Society, Economy and Philippine Development: Towards

a Social Market Economy Framework for Philippine Development” by The

Society, Economy, and Philippine Development Core Group was also launched

during the conference. The publication is the final output of the

KAF-sponsored project on a proposed national vision and strategy of

Philippine development that encapsulates Philippine society and effectively

addresses the challenges of dynamic market competition, economic openness,

globalization and social welfare. Copies of the publication were

distributed to conference participants. Former Vice President Teofisto

Guingona, Jr. provided an inspirational short talk during the book

launching.
