International Monitoring Team (IMT) head Malaysian General Dato’ Pahlawan Soheimi bin Abbas, OPAPP Undersecretary Ramon Santos, and Chairman Al Von Haq, of the GRP & MILF Coordinating Committees on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCHs) were the first recipients of membership in the KAS Peacemakers Circle. Individuals and Institutions awarded have distinguished records in peacemaking and peace-building. The establishment of this award is an effort to strengthen partnership with these institutions and individuals.

General Soheimi, Usec. Santos, Chairman Von Haq and their respective institutions, were awarded, for their work on the ongoing GRP-MILF Peace Process, by Mr. Helms and Mr. Preschle in ceremonies in Cotabato City.

On receiving his award, General Soheimi said membership in the KAS Peacemakers Circle was “an honor” for him, IMT members, and the people of Malaysia, Brunei, and Libya. Undersecretary Santos said that recognitions like the KAS Peacemakers circle were important for providing valuable “feedback” on the work of those working on the ground. Chairman Von Haq described the easy camaraderie among himself, Santos, and Soheimi, and the atmosphere of the ongoing peace process as a “historic one” In his remarks, Klaus Preschle lauded the IMT and the CCCHs for “being instrumental in drastically reducing the number of armed conflicts between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF),” and noted that the awardees “have shown the world that sustainable peace can be achieved not by the barrel of a gun but through diplomacy and negotiations.”

KAS provides ongoing support to the IMT and CCCH, especially in the area of Communications. Kablalan Peace monitor, the monthly newsletter of the GRP-MILF Peace Process, is published with KAS support.
