KAS-MEDAC Alumni Circle

Inception and Discussion on the Future of Euro-Mediterranean Relations

On June 14th, 2022, KAS and MEDAC are jointly organizing the first Alumni Circle—a conference, in Malta, designed to connect KAS-MEDAC scholars and alumni together with decision makers and experts from both shores of the Mediterranean to create an inter-generational dialogue on the Euro-Med relations and exchange inter-cultural learning experiences.

MENA Leadership Academy 4

The basics of democratic participation through CSOs and political parties

The Regional Program Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung - KAS PolDiMed organizes a two-year regional youth program, entitled "MENA Leadership Academy - MENA LA". The academy offers, for 22 young participants from the MENA region, four trainings and aims to strengthen organizational and functional capabilities of CSOs and young members of political parties. The program will also focus on individual skill training, such as communication and negotiation. The first component of the training cycle will take place in Tunis between 14 and 16 June 2022 where the participants will have 2 full days of continuous training on the role and functions of civil society and political organizations in the context of development in the MENA region.

Local Voices Towards Permanent Dialogue in the Mediterranean

The event “Local authorities and bankable urban transformation projects: access to international funds” aims at offering a better understanding of the opportunities to finance sustainable urban development actions through grants; loans and blended mechanisms. Quo Vadis Maghreb? Quo Vadis the EU in the Maghreb?

The Regional Program Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS PolDiMed) organizes, in partnership with the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), a former EU ambassadors' closed discussion. The event, entitled "Quo Vadis Maghreb? Quo Vadis the EU in the Maghreb?", will be held on 25 February, 2022 in Brussels. The event will offer an opportunity to discuss how the EU can make sense of these trends and how these trends have impacted the relationships of Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco with the European Union. The three countries of the Maghreb region have shown an increasing appetite to develop a transactional relationship with the EU over the last years.

25 selected participants will follow a well-tailored program cycle throughout 2022-2023 with a series of trainings to strengthen organizational and functional capabilities of CSOs and young members of political parties. Libya at the crossroads. What Europe and the international community can do

Rome MED Dialogues 2021

This panel, organized in the framework of the Rome MED Dialogues, represents the final phase of the Libya Proxy War Network project, developed by the ECFR Rome Office with the support of the Regional Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS PolDiMed) and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. This initiative, inspired by the practice of track-two diplomacy, consisted of several closed-door meetings attended by scholars and analysts from the countries most engaged in Libya. The goal of these meetings was to shed light on the different visions and interests currently at play in the country and to find pragmatic solutions to the Libyan conundrum. The main findings and insights that emerged from the various meetings held between October 2020 and June 2021 were expanded and elaborated in a final note that explores the relevance and depth of foreign actors' involvement in the Libyan crisis and then goes through the positions of some of the main international stakeholders and finally provides some policy recommendations for the EU strategy in Libya.

Strengthening Regional Public Policy Capacities

The aim of the training program initiated by Mr. Hedi Larbi and organized by the South Mediterranean University (SMU) with support of the Regional Program South Mediterranean of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung was to strengthen the regional capacity and develop the skills of high-level public officials, policy makers, managers from the private sector, and CSO leaders, helping them deliver on their critical mission of guiding the design and implementation of appropriate development strategies and effective public policies in the regional context of North Africa and beyond.

In recent years, Europe is increasingly perceived as withdrawing from the debate on how the future course of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) will develop. In view of new realities in the region, the Regional Program South Mediterranean of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Institut Français des Relations Internationales (IFRI) jointly organized a Franco-German dialogue in order to identify and re-evaluate Europe's priorities, goals and instruments to strengthen its standing in its immediate neighborhood.

EU-North Africa Relations: Resetting the Dialogue on Partnership

In light of the changes and challenges in North Africa, the European Union has been forced to rethink its approach towards the region. While Tunisia is the only North African country engaged in DCFTA negotiations with the EU, it appears as if the traditional instruments of the EU are not effectively responding to the current economic and political setup in the region and leave expectations on both shores of the Mediterranean unfulfilled.

From 21 to 29 September 2019, the Regional Program South Mediterranean took part in the organization of the 29th edition of Anabtawi. During nine days, 30 human rights activists from all over the MENA region were gathered in Hammamet to follow a training course on the right to education in the region

Mapping Middle Eastern Alliances

Mediterranean Advisory Group Meeting

The workshop organized by the Regional Program South Mediterranean of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in cooperation with the Casa Árabe, took a closer look at old and new patterns of Middle Eastern alliances. It assessed the major changes in regional cooperation trends both among states and between states and non-state actors. It further identified clusters of new alliance paradigms, and discussed the impact that the combination of these new patterns may have on the future of the region’s geopolitics and security.
