KASYP Virtual Discussion Series 2020

Session 01: Impact of SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic among the Youth in Asia

Last 25 June 2020, the KAS PDA team launched successfully its “KASYP Virtual Discussion Series” with the aim to facilitate an online exchange platform that will allow the KASYP alumni to share their best practices and on-going lessons in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. The first session of this series focused on discussing the “Impact of SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic among the Youth in Asia”. The objective of this session was to examine the varying impacts of COVID-19 pandemic among the youth in terms of their education, employment, career, social life, and many more.

United by Violence, Divided by Cause?

Experten aus Asien und Europa diskutierten Radikalisierung hin zu Gewalt Phänomen-übergreifend

Gewalttaten wie die Serie von islamistischen Selbstmordanschlägen auf Kirchen und Hotels in Sri Lanka oder der Anschlag auf einen Sikh-Temple in Deutschland werfen wiederkehrend die Frage nach den Ursachen der Radikalisierung von Individuen und Gruppen auf. Radikalisierung und darauffolgende Gewalttaten werden zunehmend als eine Herausforderung für den Fortbestand demokratischer und rechtsstaatlicher Institutionen verstanden und wirken sich nicht selten auch direkt auf die internationalen Beziehungen der betroffenen Länder aus. Diese Veranstaltung beschäftigte sich unter dem Title „United by Violence, Divided by Cause?“ mit der Vorstellung und dem Vergleich verschiedener Fälle und Phänomene in Asien und Europa.

KASYP Batch 11 First Training Module Successfully Completed!

This year marks the end of a decade, but for KASYP, it will be the start of a new one. Since 2010, we have successfully trained 10 batches of more than 200 young political leaders in the region. Last February 2020, we started a new decade for KASYP with Batch 11 comprising of 23 young politicians coming from 12 Asian countries and representing 19 political parties.

Celebrating A Decade of Shaping Democratic Leaders in Asia

The first KASYP Grand Alumni Meeting was a celebration of the 10th year of KASYP as a training programme for young Asian politicians with the aim of building their capacities to strengthen responsiveness and accountability of political parties in the region. As a milestone for the programme, the event was a mixture of celebrating friendship, revitalizing shared values, revisiting its vision and mission, and re- and learning new ideas about democracy. The event was comprised of different activities starting with the launch of the alumni exhibit, followed by a series of panel discussions, then a workshop on revisiting the KASYP alumni raison d’etre, after which a teambuilding followed, and finally a gala dinner to cap the entire event.

Local Governance and Development

As the second workshop of the KASYP training programme for Batch 10, the programme installed for them followed the new structure and topics introduced during the first workshop in Manila. The programme team has arranged activities in a reflective-active mixture. During mornings when participants’ attention is still active, lectures were the main pedagogical method used while in the afternoon, active learning such as worskhops were employed by the resource persons.

Konrad Adenauer School for Young Politicians (KASYP): Final Training Workshop for KASYP Batch 09

The 9th batch of KASYP (2018-2019) has concluded its final training in Germany last 25-31 August 2019 with 17 participants (9 males, 8 females) representing 7 Asian political parties and 7 countries namely Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, and the Philippines For this batch, there were 6 completed political projects including individual and group work.

3rd International Parliamentarians’ Conference on Freedom of Religion and Belief in Singapore

In cooperation with the International Panel of Parliamentarians for Freedom of Religion or Belief (IPPFoRB), the KAS Rule of Law Programme Asia held the third International Parliamentarians’ Conference on Freedom of Religion or Belief titled “Upholding a Rules Based System on Freedom of Religion or Belief” in Singapore on 30 and 31 October 2019.

Fostering digital innovation

Innovation experts from Asia visit Berlin

In the area of digital innovation, Germany can learn a lot from Asia. In September, a delegation of twelve Asian innovation experts visited Berlin. They had a clear message: Whoever wants to shape the future in his or her own interests must actively promote innovation and be open to change. In both areas, Germany still has some catching up to do.

ISAS-KAS Joint Panel Discussion

Konrad-Adenuaer-Stiftung Political Dialogue Asia and the Institute of South Asian Studies co-organised a panel discussion on 27th June 2019 on the role of digital media in the 2019 Indian General Elections. The panel explored the effects of social media not just on elections, but on the broader political culture. It also offered insight into the digital strategies of parties like the BJP and Congress, and addressed the problem of fake news and misinformation.
