The contributions spring from the 'Forum on Gender Issues' which was held in Xi'an, China in october 2007.

Japans Premierminister FUKUDA Yasuo war nach nur vier Monaten unter Druck geraten und plant eine Kabinettsumbildung. Trotz außenpolitischer Erfolge war die Popularität des Kabinetts im November und Dezember 2007 drastisch gesunken, wie Umfragen der großen Tageszeitungen verdeutlichten.

Entspannung im japanisch-chinesischen Verhältnis?

Ganz oben auf der politischen Agenda von Japans Premierminister FUKUDA Yasuo, dessen Kabinett im September 2007 die Regierungsgeschäfte übernahm, steht die Verbesserung der Beziehungen Japans zu seinen asiatischen Nachbarstaaten, allen voran China und Südkorea. Fukuda wird wohl noch im Laufe des Dezember 2007 China besuchen, ein Besuch des chinesischen Präsidenten Hu Jintao in Japan ist für April 2008 geplant. Die politischen Beziehungen zu China sind seit einigen Jahren angespannt, gleichzeitig entwickeln sich aber die Wirtschaftsbeziehungen der beiden Länder prächtig. In beiden Ländern spricht man von einem „Wirtschaftsfieber trotz politischer Eiszeit“ (seirei keinetsu).

Japans Außenpolitik zwischen den USA und Asien

Im Zentrum des politischen Interesses im November standen die Reisen von Premierminister Yasuo Fukuda in die USA und nach Singapur sowie die damit zusammenhängenden politischen Auseinandersetzungen um eine Verlängerung bzw. Neuauflage des Gesetzes zur Entsendung der japanischen Selbstverteidigungskräfte (SDF) in den Indischen Ozean.

Unterzeichnung der ASEAN-Charta

Ein herausragendes Ereignis für die Stärkung eines gemeinsamen regionalen Bewusstseins in Südostasien ist die Unterzeichnung der ASEAN-Charta, welche die Zusammenarbeit in der Region auf eine neue Grundlage stellen soll.
