ADLA Online Discussion Series 2021 - Regional Programme Political Dialogue Asia
Discussion
Details
One month after the military takeover of the civilian government, the political situation in Myanmar is getting worse day by day. From peaceful protests across the country to reverberating noise-making in large cities, the number coup arrests and the lives lost for freedom, peace, and development have been increasing. As of this writing, more than 1,200 people were arrested, charged, wanted or sentenced and worst more than 50 have sacrificed their lives following the coup in February 01, 2021. With these developments, we are afraid that the end of this “history repeating” might be far from over than what we are hoping for, otherwise.
As an alliance of leaders and organizations in Asia that shares a common interest in making democracy work for the people in their respective countries and the region in general, we ask ourselves: What does this situation in Myanmar mean to us? What can we do as a democracy alliance for our Burmese members and most especially the people of Myanmar? We asked these questions because it is our organization’s vision to have a society where individuals live with freedom, dignity, prosperity, and peace as a result of democratic governance and leadership.
To date, the ADLA Board of Representatives, through its Executive Committee, has released its first public statement, ADLA Statement No. 1, S. 2021 which denounces the unconstitutional and unlawful takeover of the Myanmar Government by the military. This statement was released to the public in 05 February 2021 to express our moral support to our members and the people of Myanmar. Unfortunately, the situation in Myanmar has not improved contrary to what we have hoped for.
In light with the worsening situation in Myanmar, the ADLA Executive Committee (AEC) is organizing an online discussion with our members in the country about the real situation on the ground. As an interconnected world, where your neighbouring country is suffering, in chaos, facing an uncertain future, constrained from connecting with the rest of us, the best thing that we could do is to help them be heard by the world. Thus, this online discussion aims to provide a platform for the ADLA members to share their stories, to inform the public on what is happening on the ground, to raise their concerns on an international platform, and make their good wishes for their country be known to the world.
