The tokenisation of carbon credits offers new ways for international climate finance.

Voluntary carbon markets give companies an incentive to invest in international climate protection. They are therefore given an important role in view of the increasing global climate protection efforts. However, these markets are characterized by a high degree of complexity, which counteracts their growing importance. Against this background, numerous new applications are emerging in the blockchain-based Web3 that are able to overcome these hurdles via the tokenization of carbon credits. For international climate protection, this could in turn result in completely new ways of improving its financing.

Der Energiemarkt ist zu einem zentralen Konfliktfeld rund um den Russland-Ukraine-Krieg geworden. Die G7, die EU und weitere westliche Demokratien versuchen die Erlöse aus russischen Kohle-, Gas- und Ölexporten mit Sanktionen und Importverboten zu verringern. Russland wiederum schränkt gezielt seine Gasexporte für Europa ein und erschließt neue Einnahmequellen in Asien. Ein neues Instrument in der Auseinandersetzung ist der G7-Ölpreisdeckel, der die Einnahmen aus russischen Ölexporten durch einen erzwungenen Niedrigpreis verringern soll. Seine Wirksamkeit ist umstritten, da die großen Ölimporteure Indien und China sich voraussichtlich nicht daran beteiligen werden. Zudem besteht das Risiko, dass Russland seine Ölexporte als Gegenreaktion stoppt und damit eine Ölpreiskrise auslöst. Auf der anderen Seite ergibt sich aus dem Ölpreisdeckel ein Verhandlungsvorteil für potentielle Ölimporteure gegenüber Russland.
