International Trade Regimes and Sustainable Development

A Review of European and Asian Trade Policies

Trade agreements, i.e. WTO rules and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), effectively shape global trade flows. They also provide incentives for sustainable development. The workshop looks into the current status of EU FTAs with Asia from this perspective.

Details

As an introduction to the topic, Professor Dr. Mark BUNGENBERG LL.M., University of Saarland, Germany, will present a global perspective on "International Trade Regimes and Sustainable Development." as several EU-Free Trade Agreements with Asia are currently negotiated.

Filip DERAEDT, Deputy Head of Unit, South and South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Directorate-General for Trade, European Commission, will give on overview on their current status and will deliver an assessment of their potential impact on Sustainable Development.

An Asian Perspective on the EU-Free Trade Agreements with Asia, i.e. Singapore and South Korea, will be made by Eugene QUEK, First Secretary (Commercial), Singapore.

The presentations will be summed up by a Commentary by Dr Danae AZARIA, Lecturer in Law at University College London (UCL) and followed by a Q&A session.
