Seminar

Climate Change and Energy Security in Southeast Asia

Workshop for Cambodian Journalists

The KAS Regional Project Energy and Security and Climate Change Asia-Pacific (RECAP) in cooperation with the Cambodian Club of Journalists will conduct a several days training seminar for Cambodian Journalists.

Details

For several decades, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung has been supporting the training of journalists in Asia to contribute to an open and critical reporting. Examples of these long lasting cooperations are the Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and the partnership with the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) at the Royal University Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

Professional and well-engaged media are a key for civic engagement in society. This is particularly true when it comes to combatting the causes of climate change, adaptation or the change in energy supply. Especially local media should trigger a debate on the challenges and the opportunities to restrict global warming by changing the current patterns of production and consumption.

In Southeast Asia, there are many talented students of media and journalism who seek to support the development of their home countries. Energy and climate politics are of great interest among the students. Indeed, the standard training programme usually does not comprise deepened knowledge in the field of climate and energy journalism. This is where a common project of RECAP and DMC comes in. It continues the existing cooperation with the KAS country office in Cambodia.

During the seminar, national and international practicioners of the media industry will introduce concepts of contemporary energy and climate reporting to Cambodian students of journalism. In a practical part, each participant, together with an experienced journalist, will conduct field studies about a topic of their own choice and write reportages which will be published in Cambodian media.
