Think Tanks from all GCC states gathered in Salalah on July 7 for the second time to discuss their role within the region’s societies. AFKAR2 is the continuation of last year’s event, which was the first of its kind in the Gulf region. The dialogue is a one-day seminar which aims at strengthening the effectiveness and impact of research institutes. Its objective is to extend the existing framework of action and the level of cooperation among Think Tanks and with the various stakeholders.

First Journalism Training Course in Oman a Raving Success

KAS Regional Programme Gulf States exports Journalism Training to additional GCC countries

The KAS Regional Programme Gulf States, the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) Oman and the Oman Journalist Association successfully completed their first joint journalism training course. The week-long introductory course which was led by JONA-alumni Anne Allmeling and Abdullah Al-Maani from the SQU offered 16 Omani journalism students (14 women) the opportunity to gain first experience in the work of a journalist. The seminar marked the first step in KAS’ efforts to expand its training activities beyond the borders of the UAE to other countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Online Portal of the 6th German-Arab Journalists' Academy

KAS Regional Programme Gulf States conducted the 6th Annual German-Arab Journalists' Academy in Abu Dhabi in October 2011. Eight scholars from the KAS journalism programme in Germany worked together with eight young journalists from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Together they explored new reporting and narrative styles and created a multi-media online portal titled: "Al Boom - Future of the Emirates"! The website is now live and can be found at:

ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVES ON THE ARAB SPRING

KAS AND INSEAD ORGANIZE POLICY-BREAKFAST WITH RAED H. CHARAFEDINNE, BANQUE DU LIBAN

The political impact of the “Arab Spring”, which began a little over a year ago in Tunisia, has been at the centre of academic and political reviews. KAS Regional Programme Gulf States took the analysis to another level and invited Raed H. Charafedinne, Vice Governor of the Lebanese Central Bank, to Abu Dhabi to speak about the economic aspects of the Arab transformation process. The Policy Breakfast "The Economic and Financial Prospects of the Arab Awakening - A Year On" had been jointly organised with the INSEAD Business School Abu Dhabi.

KAS Regional Programme Gulf States expands Journalism training to further GCC-countries

Following the successful establishment of training courses for young journalists in the United Arab Emirates, KAS Regional Programme Gulf States expands its training activities and offers its courses now also in Oman and Kuwait. The first seminar is currently running in Muscat in cooperation with the Cultural Club of Oman and the Oman Journalist Association.

With conventional financial systems struggling to master the global financial crisis, alternative economic models such as Islamic Finance have become more interesting. “The obvious failures in the conventional financial system have created a willingness to listen to alternatives. Islamic Finance is given the opportunity to proof itself and to play a key part in world economy,” stated Simon Gray, Director of Supervision at the Dubai Financial Services Authority last night in his presentation “Responsibility in Islamic Finance“ hosted by the KAS Regional Programme Gulf States in Abu Dhabi.
