The Role of Think Tanks in the Gulf Region: Potential, Challenges and Benefits

KAS REGIONAL PROGRAM GULF STATES AND TAWASUL HOST THE “FIRST GCC THINK TANK DEVELOPMENT DIALOGUE” IN SALALAH, OMAN

Over thirty experts from more than fifteen countries gathered in the southern Omani city of Salalah on July 7, to discuss potentials, challenges and benefits of Think Tanks in the Gulf Region. Among them were members of the Legislative and State Councils, as well as officials from universities, think tanks, media platforms and human rights organizations. Ambassador Luigi Narbone, Head of the EU Delegation to Riyadh was also present. The event was organized by Tawasul under the leadership of Khaled Al Haribi and by KAS Regional Program Gulf-States.

Expert-Meeting on Gender and Public Policy

On May 31, 2011 KAS Regional Program Gulf-States and Dubai School of Government (DSG) held an experts' meeting on Gender issues and the role of women in traditional societies. Sizani Ngubane, founder of the Rural Women’s Movement (RWM) in South Africa, and Gender/Public Policy experts from the DSG used the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences in their common field of activity.

In a captivating account of the situation of women in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal region Sizani Ngubane, founder of the Rural Women’s Movement(RWM), shared her experiences of the organization’s work. On invitation of the KAS Regional-Program Gulf-States Mrs. Ngubane spoke yesterday in Abu Dhabi to representatives of institutions that are engaged in development work. In her remarks she explained the challenges women are facing in the traditional societal structures of the region and how the RWM has contributed significantly to enable them to participate in local political decision-making.
